A Busy Bee Year!
The summer of 2022 was an exciting one here at The Lowry Hotel, with the sun beaming and kids on their summer holidays, those months filled with joy and a lot of buzz!
World Bee Day
This special day took place on 20th May and we decided that it was the perfect opportunity to unveil our new bee logo. The Lowry Bee logo, designed by artist Thomas Wolski, is a symbol that represents The Lowry Hotel’s ties to the City of Manchester. The logo will be placed high on the wall in our reception area and guests can search for the bee using our new golden telescope.
Thomas Wolski is an amazing contemporary artist who creates highly detailed work inspired by everyday life, it creates an exquisitely unique insight into the modern world, and we are very proud to have one of his art pieces representing our iconic five-star hotel.
The bee is the symbol of Manchester and this city of industry, work ethic and cooperation. The humble worker bee has been a symbol of Manchester since the 1800s. Today, you can see the bee wherever you look – in our city crest, in our street art and mosaics and on our lampposts and shop windows. It’s a real constant reminder of where this city’s been and what it stands for. Our Lowry Bee pays homage to a city of worker bees, and more importantly, it represents our hard-working team here at the hotel.
The Busy Bee Competition
This year, with the revealing of our new Lowry Bee logo, The Lowry Hotel introduced the Busy Bee Photo Summer Holidays Photo Competition to inspire the little photographers in your family.
As part of the competition, we asked the children staying with us to snap a photo of a bee during their travels across the city – this could have been an actual bee, a sign, a statue, or something which symbolises what the bee stands for. They posted their snapshots on social media with the hashtag #lowrylife - the winning photos were chosen by Thomas Wolski and will be displayed in our amazing art gallery here at the hotel.
We received some amazing entries and loved seeing Manchester through your eyes. We had three winners who gave us outstanding photos and their prizes are as follows:
- The winner received a free hotel stay
- Our 1st runner up received a meal for four at The River Restaurant
- Our 2nd runner up received an afternoon tea for four
Here is what artist Thomas Wolski said about the winning photographs:
The Winner: Gorgeous composition, showcasing the bee artwork but the focus being family, joy and togetherness. A really lovely picture overall, it’s one of those that just makes you smile.
1st Runner Up: They have certainly gone out of their way to embrace the challenge and explore the city to find touches of our buzzy heritage at every turn - once you are tasked with looking you will certainly find!
2nd Runner Up: Simple and everlasting, a piece of historical relevance that probably gets very much dismissed daily. A little rough around the edges like the city but serves a purpose and it's still here! A nod to our industrial past with a modern twist i.e., the graffiti in the background. There’s even a shadow- see we do get some sunshine up North!
Thank you to everyone who entered, and we cannot wait to host this again! Keep your cameras ready and your eyes peeled for next year!
