Established in 1994, Comme Ca Art pioneered the creation of alternative exhibition venues throughout Manchester City Centre, offering up and coming artists the opportunity to showcase their works to a wide and varied audience.

Since 2004 Comme Ca has worked alongside the five star Lowry Hotel, producing an enviable line up of exhibitions. This has become Comme Ca’s main exhibition space where people from all over the world can view the works on display 24 hours a day. Many of the works have been bought from the shows and are now on display in private homes as far a field as Iceland, the USA, Russia and Australia.

The exhibitions range from solo exhibitions to groups shows and this September we welcome a new artist to Comme Ca, Ramsay Gibb who will be exhibiting his brand new series of Seascapes. The sea is beyond our everyday lives. We engage with and have knowledge of a tiny fraction of it. It makes great demands of a painter, is always tantalisingly beyond fully capturing in static paint. It seems to run through the fingers, evading possession. There is no single characteristic of sea water, it is foam, bubbles, stretched, compressed, sheer, chaotic, and often all of these simultaneously. What Ramsay portrays is fraction of time but it is essential to understand the moments before and after, the complete motion of which the painted moment is a small part. It is a paradox that only by investing many hours and layering paint that the beauty and complexity of that instant can be revealed.

“Painting by the Sea” by Ramsay Gibb runs until the 6th November 2018.
